The art of finely crafted steel parts

We’ve already touched on the importance of the metal industry in Belgium in one of our previous profiles: the metalworker. We’ve stated that the metal industry is the base of all the other industries since finely crafted steel parts are a necessity for the building of quality machines. And right at this starting point is where we find our next profile: the CNC turner. He makes those finely crafted steel parts by using a CNC machine.

CNC stands for “computer numerical control.” These machines make parts by using computer software that is pre-programmed to tell the machine what to do. A CNC machine allows for three-dimensional cutting tasks to be accomplished with a single set of prompts. Once the programming is put into the machine, a CNC machine will operate on its own. But it still needs an operator to make things go smoothly!

Being a CNC turner is no serial work, it requires attention to detail and an insightful mind. You are responsible for the quality pieces you produce and you keep an eye on the maintenance of your machine. Therefore an eye for detail and tidiness is definitely needed.

A day in the life of a CNC turner

You are responsible for the delivery of accurate workpieces. Therefore you check the pieces once they are produced and make sure they fit the demanded quality. You are responsible for your machine and can determine the adjustment values and the condition of the pieces and the tools. Throughout your work, you record data for production and quality monitoring such as malfunctions and interventions. You also need to maintain your stock of raw materials and order extra when your stock is low.

What makes a good CNC turner?

• You have experience with setting and programming CNC machines.
• Reading plans is no problem for you.
• You can work with a caliper and other measuring devices.
• You have a technical education.
• Communicative level of English (knowledge of Dutch or French is a plus).
